William Lee Byrd

William “Bill” Byrd, passed away on July 29, 2024. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Gwen Neely Byrd and Jack E. Byrd, Sr. M.D.

He grew up in Atlanta and graduated from North Fulton High School in 1965 and was a high school track star as a sprinter. He attended Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, where he earned a B.S. degree in Biology. He taught science courses at Dougherty County High School in Albany before returning to Atlanta where he began working in the Surety Bond Department at Continental Insurance Company. When he moved to Forsyth he was hired as a Radio Operator with the Forsyth Police Department. He was later assigned to the Patrol Division until he retired as a Lieutenant. 

Bill was an excellent electrician, building radios when he was eight years old. He enjoyed white water rafting, reading, and watching sports. He was involved in all areas of construction, and teamed up with Buck Wilder and established Double B Remodeling. 

He is survived by his brother, Jack Byrd, Jr. (Jan), of Atlanta, Georgia; sisters, Susy Greene of Hampton, Georgia and Fran Logan (David) of Lynn Haven, Florida; nephew, Jack Byrd, III of Atlanta; nephew, Jeff Greene (Amanda) of Williamson, Georgia; niece, Nicole Grant (Steve) of Dallas, Georgia; nephew, Andy Logan (Terri) of Youngstown, Florida; and eight great-nieces and great-nephews: Knoxx Greene, Wyatt Greene and Marshall Greene, Lizzie Smith (Brandon), Emily Falk (Liam), Stephanie Grant, Hailey Logan and Dylan Logan; and great-great niece, Logan Addie Smith, as well as step-children. Bill was preceded in death by his parents. 

He will be greatly missed for his generous attitude and wonderful sense of humor. A special thanks to Chris, the maintenance manager at the Brentwood Apartments for his support and friendship, as well as to Mary Ellen, his housekeeper. 

Bill’s wish was to be cremated and no service is scheduled at this time.
