Sandra Leigh Mitchell passed away peacefully on June 30. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the oldest of four daughters of Frances Wilder Mitchell and James Vernon Mitchell. Sandra was a graduate of Mary Persons High School, class of 1963. She received degrees from Agnes Scott College, the University of Virginia, and Georgia State University. She taught English for thirty-three years in several different places including for Tift College at Georgia Baptist School of Nursing in Atlanta and for Griffin-Spalding County at Griffin High School.
Miss Mitchell was a lifelong member of Forsyth Methodist Church, where she was one of the teachers of the Wesley Fellowship Class for many years. She also belonged to the United Methodist Women and was a past president of that organization. She enjoyed belonging to the Forsyth Book Club and two bridge clubs, as well.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Billy Lancaster and Eric Engstrom. She is survived by her three sisters, Anne Mitchell Stephens (Clyde) of Cleveland, TN, Fran Mitchell Lancaster of Forsyth, and Jamille Mitchell Sergent (Rod) of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; two nieces, Dr. Jill Lancaster (Chris Ivey) and Mallory Stephens (Marvin Ovando), and a nephew, Preston Lancaster (Danielle); two great-nephews, Kade Lancaster and Evan Ovando, and a great-niece, Kara Lancaster.
Services will be held Wednesday, July 3 at 11:00 Forsyth Methodist Church. The Reverend Jody Barfield will officiate. Visitation will be prior to the service at 10:00 in the sanctuary. Burial will be private in Forsyth City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the donor’s favorite charity. Family may be contacted at the residence of Fran Lancaster, 56 Blue Store Road, Forsyth.
