Phil Walker, 78, of Forsyth, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Forsyth City Cemetery, Newton Memorial Drive, Forsyth, Georgia, with the Reverends Dave Martin and Ricky Niblett officiating. Family will greet friends for a time of visitation on Friday, February 7, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, at the Monroe County Memorial Chapel.
Phil was born June 14, 1946, to the late Carlton “Kotch” and Louise Walker in Forsyth, Georgia. He proudly became the first director of the Monroe County Recreation Department. He also was inducted into the Forsyth-Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame for not only being co-captain of the 1963 Mary Persons football team, but also for going on to be an instrumental leader in the development of a youth recreation program in the county. Phil began coaching in the late 1960s and was named the county’s first recreation chairman in the mid 1970s. Phil, who also refereed high school football games, was a member of the Monroe County school board for more than two decades. The Monroe County Recreation Park is named in his honor, the “Phil Walker Park”. Phil also attended the University of Georgia, and he retired from Georgia Power with twenty years of service. He was a longtime member and deacon of Dayspring Presbyterian Church, PCA. Phil was an incredible husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be missed dearly.
Phil is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Andy Walker; his children, Brad Walker of Forsyth, Tara Bass (Tommy) of Forsyth, Tammy Turner (Michael) of Forsyth, and Brett Walker of Atlanta; his grandchildren, Paige Bass, Mallory Turner, Walker Turner, and Adelyn Turner; his brothers, Barry Walker (Nita) and George Walker (Judy), both of Forsyth; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Phil is preceded in death by his brother, Mallory Walker.
