Nellie Underwood Taunton

December 12, 1926 — August 21, 2021

Her family rejoiced as Nellie Underwood Taunton was carried into the presence of her Lord and joined many family members in heaven on August 21, 2021.  Born Nellie Merita Underwood to the late Udolphus Sikes and Martha Brown Underwood, she was a lifelong resident of Taylor County, graduating from Butler High School.  She was a faithful member of Butler Baptist Church, serving on many committees, singing in the choir, and teaching Awanas for 27 years to her beloved 4 and 5 year olds.  Nellie was also the Chief Administrator of the Food Stamp Program in Taylor County for over 20 years.

One of 11 children, Nellie always cherished family ties as her greatest earthly joy and devoted much of her life to nurturing and enjoying her immediate and extended kinfolk.  She married her Navy veteran husband, on June 1, 1947, and they recently celebrated their 74th anniversary.  Together they raised their 2 sons, Douglas and Stephen.  Spending time at their farm raising, preserving and sharing their produce was another great joy in her life.  But nothing compared to her utter bliss in welcoming every one of her 5 grandchildren and instilling in them a love of her Lord and all He created.

Nellie leaves behind her devoted husband, Henry D Taunton, Sr., and their 2 sons Henry Douglas, Jr. (Linda) and William Stephen Taunton, Sr. (Linda).  Left to cherish her memory in special ways are her 5 grandchildren: Staci Wells (Derek), Amanda Taunton, William Stephen Taunton, Jr. (Rebecca), Laurie Elizabeth Cochran (Brent) and Courtney Anderson (Jay) and her 13 precious great grandchildren whom she especially adored.

A private graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 24, at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, led by Rev. Mike Brandenburg.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Lighthouse Community Hospice, 1029 Meredith Park Drive, McDonough GA. 30253.

Monroe County Memorial Chapel has charge of arrangements.
