Mrs. Vento, the daughter of the late Donato Barrera and Felicia Serrano was born August 13, 1939, in Pinar del Rio, Cuba. As a child, she enjoyed working in the family’s general store and attending cock fights with her father. Mirta was the second oldest of six children. She contributed to the family’s finances by taking in sewing and embroidering jobs from the locals, and later selling sweet treats to the workers in the tobacco fields. At the age of 17, she met the love of her life, Ricelo, and were married in June of 1962.
In May of 1971, the family emigrated to the U.S. fleeing communist Cuba. Mirta was a homemaker and took care of children to supplement the family’s income. She also worked as a seamstress in garment factories and bridal salon for many years. She had a passion for plants, cooking, and caring for loved ones. The Ventos moved to Monroe Co. from Miami, Fl. in 2006 to be with their children and help raise their granddaughters.
Mrs. Vento is preceded in death by husband Ricelo, brother Donato Barrera Jr., and sister Migdora Cruz; survived by daughter, Barbara Woodward (Dale) of Forsyth, son Alex Vento (Carla) of Monroe County, sisters Mery Martinez (Jose), Noemi Marimon and Marta Diaz of Miami, Fl, granddaughters Emily McCallister of Marietta and Amelia Vento of Monroe County.
