Mrs. Smith was born on October 19, 1926 in Columbus, GA and passed away June 18, 2018 in Macon, GA. The youngest of five daughters of the late Knowles Dee White and Helen Waters White. The family moved to Atlanta during her early years. Mrs. Smith graduated from the former North Fulton High School and received an Early Childhood Development degree from Stephens College in Columbia, MO. She taught kindergarten at Samuel Inman Grammar School in Atlanta, GA, before her marriage and move to Americus, GA. Mrs. Smith lived in Americus for 35 years before moving to Forsyth, GA, in 1983. After the death of her husband in 2001, she moved to Carlyle Place in Macon. She continued to enjoy flower gardening and visits from her family. The family appreciates the love and kindness shown by friends, staff, and caregivers at Carlyle Place and Pine Pointe Hospice. A former Girl Scout leader and PTA president, Mrs. Smith was the first president of the Green Thumb Garden Club in Americus, honorary member of the Junior Service League, owner of Play School Nursery, member of the Council of Safety Chapter, DAR, Forsyth United Methodist Church, past UMW circle leader, and the Forsyth Book Club. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Herschel Atticus Smith, Jr., and her sisters Dorothy Ramsey of Macon, Betty Driver Kistler of Signal Mountain, TN, and Frances Young of Atlanta. Surviving are her children, Kay Dee and David Green of Macon, Cdr Herschel Smith III, USN ret and Pam Smith of Americus, Judge R. Rucker Smith of Americus, and Lee Smith and Dr. Deena H. Smith of Forsyth. Moppy’s grandchildren include Caroline Mousset (Cédric) of Washington, DC, David Green, Jr. of Macon, Laura Schomisch (Nick), Greer, SC, Capt Herschel Smith IV, USAF (Missy), Annapolis, MD, Cole Smith (Johanna), Atlanta, Charlotte Smith, Atlanta, Madison Smith, Savannah, James Wilder Smith, Atlanta, Mason Smith, Albany, and great-grandchildren Alexandre Mousset, Morgan Smith, Atticus Smith, Decio Smith, and Katie Schomisch. Surviving also is her sister Jeane DuBose of Atlanta and ten nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery in Americus on Friday, June 22 at 11 am. Family will receive friends at the Monroe County Memorial Chapel in Forsyth on Thursday, June 21 from 5-7 pm. Memorials may be made in her memory to the Dr. Herschel A.
