Joseph Chester Grant, 80, of Forsyth passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2024. Chester was born November 23, 1943, to the late Cullen and Ruby Grant in Montezuma, Georgia. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 9, 2024, at 11:00AM, at the First Baptist Church of Forsyth, with the Reverend Brian Moore officiating. Burial at Forsyth City Cemetery will follow the service. The family will greet friends Thursday, August 8, 2024, from 5:00PM to 7:00PM at Monroe County Memorial Chapel, 86 W. Main Street, Forsyth.
Chester graduated in 1962 from Mary Persons High School where he served as the Senior Class President and was captain and MVP of the football team. He began his collegiate football career as a scholarship athlete at Mississippi State University. He went on to play football for Delta State College where he graduated in 1966. After retiring from a career at Georgia Power, Chester served as a bailiff for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Chester was a member of the Forsyth Golf Club and enjoyed hunting and fishing. In 2024, he was proud to be inducted into the Forsyth - Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame. A faithful member of Sharon Primitive Baptist Church, Chester served there for many years as a deacon and song leader.
Chester is survived by his wife, Kaye Grant of Forsyth; daughter, Christi Dorton (Scott) of Griffin; son, Clay Grant (Leslie) of Forsyth; daughter, Camille Lanier (Bryan) of Forsyth; son, Corey Grant (Rachel) of High Point, North Carolina; grandchildren, Caleb Walston (Brittany), Chesna Brown (Rusty), Colby Walston, Mason Grant, Charlotte Grant, and Norah Grant; four great-grandchildren; sister, Pat Grant Bell of Jackson, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Chester is preceded in death by his brothers, Marvin Grant and Walton Grant; sister, Joyce Holland; and infant sister, Lucy Ellen Grant.
