Jack Pitman

March 12, 1937 — August 11, 2024

Forsyth

Norman Jackson “Jack” Pitman was born on March 12, 1937, in Lovejoy, Georgia, to Pierce Jackson Pitman and Helen Mitchell Pitman. The oldest of three children, he moved with his family to Monroe County in 1947 when Pierce began working for Talmadge Farm. Jack graduated in 1955 from Mary Persons High School, where he met Linda Frazier, the love of his life and his wife of nearly 65 years. They married in 1959 and were due to celebrate their wedding anniversary next week. After high school, Jack enlisted in the National Guard and began working at Robins Air Force Base. A self-made businessman, Jack opened his first service station, Standard Oil, in 1969 in Monroe County. He also owned and operated Pitman’s Chevron, Pitman’s Colonial Oil, and most recently before his retirement, Pitman’s BP. He prided himself in maintaining the cleanest restrooms on I-75, and he enjoyed meeting tourists as they passed through town from the interstate. He was an active member of the Monroe County Jaycees, holding several offices, and the Moose Lodge. He was also a Mason.

Jack was a master woodworker, self-taught handyman, and a committed gardener, turning out the finest tomato and pepper plants in Monroe County every summer. But above all, Jack’s greatest joy and devotion in life was his family. Even in his final days, he delighted in spending time with his 7 great-grandchildren, taking them fishing in the creek and doling out moon pies when their parents weren’t looking. Jack is predeceased by his parents and his sister, Linda Susan Pitman. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Linda Frazier Pitman; brother, Jerry Pitman (Carolyn); children Kim Pitman (Mark Stevens), Joey Pitman (Karen), and Fran Tapley (Greg); grandchildren Brandon Joyner, Mallory Miller (Harley), Taylor Bittick (Lawson), J.J. Pitman (Chelsea), Anna Hodge (Caleb), and Pierce Tapley. His adored great-grandchildren are Camryn Miller; Ora, Jude, and Van Pitman; Riley Jo Hodge; and Lillian and Jack Bittick.
