Mrs. Ernestine Prescott Thompson of Forsyth, passed away at age 97 on January 17, 2025. Visitation will be held from 2PM-4PM on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at Monroe County Memorial Chapel in Forsyth, followed by a graveside service at 1:00 PM on Monday, January 20, 2025, at Glenn J. Thompson Family Cemetery, 270 Sawmill Road, Higgston, Georgia 30410.
Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Rev. Alec F. Thompson, who was a pastor of several churches in Georgia and North Carolina throughout his ministry, as well as interim pastor at several churches in middle Georgia after his retirement. She was a life-long homemaker, public and private school teacher, and church worker throughout the years of her husband’s pastorates. They retired in 1990 from Clayton Baptist Church in Clayton, Georgia, and moved to Forsyth where she continued her church work at First Baptist Church. She was a beloved co-worker in church activities throughout her life, particularly with Women’s Missionary Union and church libraries. She frequently served as a pianist also. She volunteered with Circle of Care and Meals on Wheels in Forsyth and was active in the JOY Sunday School class at First Baptist.
Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Prescott; and her sister, Mrs. Edna Brinson (Russell), from Millen, Georgia. She is survived by four children – Mary Barton of Jonesboro, Norma Thompson of Macon, Ernie Thompson (Pat) of Barnesville, and Joe Thompson (Bridget) of Barnesville.
She also has six grandchildren – Ross Barton (Christopher) of Groveport, Ohio, Carly Wright (Bobby), Krista Thompson and Courtney McBroom (Kevin) of Barnesville, Eric Thompson (Jessica) of Macon, and Daniel Thompson (Allison) of Forsyth. Great-grandchildren include Tyler Connell of Barnesville, Carys Thompson of Macon, Joey Thompson, Anna Thompson, and Phil Thompson of Forsyth. She has two great-grandchildren – Silas Barton of Groveport, Ohio, and Isabel McBroom of Barnesville. She also has one surviving niece, Mrs. Sue Smith (Rick) of Columbus, Georgia.
Other survivors include, sisters-in-law, Jackie Thompson of Ailey, Georgia, Melba Lehman (Carl) of Kennesaw, Georgia, and Marian Dunn (Clyde) of Milner, Georgia; plus numerous nieces, nephews, and both great and great-great nieces and nephews.
The family asks that memorial donations be made to Circle of Care or Meals on Wheels, both of Forsyth, the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home, or to the Glenn J. Thompson Scholarship Fund at Brewton-Parker College.
