Cathryn Futral

Dr. Cathryn Futral passed away February 11, 2025. A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM Saturday March 1, 2025, at First Baptist Church of Forsyth, 95 West Morse Street, Forsyth, Georgia 31029 with the Reverend Jay Dockweiler and the Reverend Jerry Elder officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Cathryn Futral Shakespeare Scholarship Fund at Mercer University, 1400 Coleman Ave. Macon, Georgia, 31207 or to First Baptist Church 95 West Morse Street, Forsyth, Georgia. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Cathryn was born July 7, 1928, in Wadley, Georgia, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Futral Sr. Cathryn graduated from Wadley High School which has since closed. She graduated with a major in English from Tift College, a master’s in religious education from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and a master’s in English and Ph.D. from the University of Southern Mississippi. She was a professor of English and Administrator at Tift College for thirty-eight years, and Professor of English and Associate Dean at Tift College of Education at Mercer University. She served as Deacon and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church in Forsyth, Georgia. Cathryn enjoyed reading, giving book club reviews and antiques - human and non - and some children.

The Cathryn Futral Excellence in Teaching Award is given each year at Mercer University Honors Program by the Tift College of education to a distinguished professor. The Cathryn Futral Shakespeare Scholarship Fund, started by a Tift Alumna, is given each year at Mercer University.

She was preceded in death by her parents Mr. and Mrs. John W. Futral of Wadley, Georgia; siblings Alice F. Williams of Wadley, Georgia; John W. Futral, Jr. of Rocklin, California; Doris F. Watts of Winder, Georgia; and Carolyn F. Hamrick of Unadilla, Georgia; and many friends.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
