Catherine Jennings Hardin Newton

Mrs. Lee Trammell Newton, Sr., 94, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, January 11, 2018. A native of Monroe County, she was born in the family home, Hil’ Hardin, in Forsyth to Hugh H. and Katie Mae Arnold Hardin on August 4th, 1923. She attended Mary Persons High School, Arlington Hall Junior College in Washington D.C., and then graduated from Randolph-Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia, where she was a member of the Phi Mu sorority. After her debut in the Atlanta Debutante Club in 1943, she was united in marriage to Lee Trammell Newton Sr. of Madison, Georgia, in 1947. They resided in Madison for 4 years and then returned to Forsyth for the remainder of her life. Mrs. Newton devoted her life to generations of her family. She was known as “Mimi” to the younger generations. She was a member of and a Sunday school teacher at The Forsyth United Methodist Church. She volunteered in organizations such as the Red Cross and the Girl Scouts of America. She was a member of the Capital City Club of Atlanta and the Idle Hour Club of Macon. She served as treasurer of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America Madison Chapter and was a member of the Forsyth Book Club. She enjoyed her gardening, especially roses and boxwood, cooking, traveling, and her dogs. She particularly enjoyed playing bridge with her Forsyth and Macon friends and spending time with her extended family at Sea Island from her early childhood on. Pre-deceased by her husband Lee Trammell Newton, Sr., she is survived by her five children; son, Lee Trammell Newton, Jr. (Ann) of Atlanta, daughters, Katie N. Jones (Randy) of Nashville, TN, Anna N. Smith (Grady) of Forsyth, Nancy N. Arnold (Frank) of Macon, and Natalie N. Chase (George) of Atlanta. Her grandchildren include Jenny Booker, Tarva Morgan (Josh), Bryan Jones (Kristin), Catherine Dunford (David), Charlie Evans (Caitlin), Elizabeth Evans, Lee Evans, and Callaway Chase. Six great grandchildren also survive her. The graveside service will be held at 11am, Saturday, January 13th at the Forsyth City Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the Newton home after the service.
