Alfred “Mercer” Bush Jr., 78, of Forsyth, passed away Friday, January 17, 2025, in Macon, GA.

Mercer was born on May 11, 1946, in Griffin, GA to the late Alfred Mercer Bush, Sr and Sara Elizabeth Cook. He grew up in Barnesville and graduated from the Gordon Military High School. Mercer was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving some time in the Vietnam War. Following his service in the military, Mercer served in law enforcement for the Barnesville Police department from 1969 - 1972, the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office from 1972 - 1981, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s department from 1981 – 2004; for a break in service to deploy and work in Iraq as a law enforcement trainer. On his return, Mercer continued his dedication to service to the community and worked back with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, where he served at the courthouse, until August 2024, where he retired. Mercer was a Lieutenant. 

Mercer was a longtime member of Fredonia Church where he served as chairman of the board and church historian. The church was built by his great-great grandfather, Jackson Bush. Mercer loved to ride his Harley Davidson motorcycle years ago and watch NASCAR and UFC.

Mercer is survived by his daughter, Sonya R. Mageau (James) of West Melbourne, Florida; two grandchildren, Kayla R. Mageau and Dakota M. Mageau; sister, Ellen Woods, of Tunnel Hill, Georgia; niece, Sara Durst (Daren Mudrey); nephew, Paul Woods (Lisa); and several great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Fredonia Church with the Reverends Ken Peeples and Heath Miller officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Fredonia Church, Outreach Fund, PO Box 719, Barnesville, GA 30204.
