Alan Verner Davis, a truly great man, was born on March 31, 1953 in Austin, Texas to the late Eileen Knight Davis and late Master Sergeant Harold “Jack” Davis, United States Air Force, Retired.
Though Alan traveled the world throughout his childhood, living in England, Germany, and the Philippines, he landed in Warner Robins, Georgia in high school, where he met the love of his life and wife of almost 45 years, Sheryl. Alan spent his career in finance, most recently as the CFO of Encompass Group in McDonough, Georgia. He owned several small businesses and was a CPA, often offering his expertise to those who needed help. His prodigious career’s most legendary accomplishment was his impressive rise to leadership at the Bibb Company in Macon, Georgia. Alan began in the mailroom at Bibb after graduating from the University of Georgia in 1976. By 1986, at the age of 33, he had become President of the company.
Though his professional achievements were many, Alan would want to be known for devoting his life to his true focus as a loving husband, a caring father, and a doting grandfather. His family adored him – for selflessly lending his strength, humor, or compassion when each was needed, and giving his infinite, unwavering love throughout every day. He had several great friendships that lasted his lifetime, including those with his brothers, which brought him enduring happiness. Alan will be known for the way that he treated people and for his immeasurable kindness. By nature, he put people at ease. Each person that met him felt seen, heard, appreciated, and welcome by his side. His dry wit and gregarious nature left laughter wherever his soles tread.
Alan took his last breath on November 9, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer. His absence will be deeply felt by many, but his remarkable presence will live eternally. In an accomplished and wonderful life, it is a testament to who he was that his greatest achievements will be not his material successes but rather the quality of his character, the respect of his peers, the draw of his charm, and the admiration of his loved ones.
Alan was preceded in passing by his father and mother, his mother-in-law Agnes Adkins, his sister Patty Purvis, his sister-in-law Carol Davis, and many friends and relatives. Alan’s spirit lives on in his wife, Sheryl, his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Barrie Davis, of Bogart, Georgia, his granddaughters, Anna and Mia, his daughter and son-in-law Katie and Benji Anderson, of Athens, Georgia, and his grandsons, Sam and Charlie. Alan is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Sandy Davis, of Cumming, Georgia, his brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Vicki Davis, of Bonaire, Georgia, many marvelous nieces and nephews and their children, his sister-in-law, Karen Renberg, of Tampa, Florida, his stepmother, Jo Davis, of Warner Robins, Georgia, and her family, and many tremendous friends.
A celebration of life will be held on November 29, 2020 at the University of Georgia Chapel. Due to health concerns, this event will be private.
