Roy Brown Allen Jr., 82, of Pecan Circle, Forsyth, Georgia, passed away on July 14, 2016, at his home. Roy was born in Cedar Bluff, Ala., the son of Roy Brown Allen Sr., and Donnie Humphries Allen. Roy was a retired ironworker, his last position having been as a superintendent of re-bar at Plant Scherer in Juliette.
Roy was a hunter, a dedicated worker, a creative gardener, a loving father to his five children, and a devoted husband to his wife, Shirley Lee Allen. Roy grew up in North Alabama and met Shirley while both were students at Emma Sansom High School in Gadsden, Ala. They were married on Aug. 2, 1952, and remained together through their 63 years of marriage. Roy’s career moved the family frequently and his children were raised in Alabama, South Carolina, and Arkansas, but mostly in Georgia. Roy lived in Rome, Ga., while most of his children were in high school, moving to Forsyth in 1979. Roy enjoyed traveling with Shirley. They took the opportunity to visit sons living in Washington State and Australia and friends around the country, driving their RV with them whenever possible. Together, they drove the length of the Alaska Highway to visit the 49th state. Roy hunted deer in Georgia and elk and caribou on hunting trips, including trips with his son, David, and his son-in-law Larry Bain. He described himself as having lived “a wonderful life.”
Roy is survived by his wife, Shirley, and by their five children: Roy Thomas Allen of Chattanooga; Dr. John David (Kathy) Allen of North Augusta, S.C.; James W. (Susan) Allen of Augusta; Sandra Allen (Larry) Bain of Juliette; and Charles Gordon (Alla) Allen, of West End, Queensland, Australia. He and Shirley have 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Roy is also survived by his siblings Sarah Allen (Elbert) Tarvin, of Gadsden, AL, Sylvia Allen Moore, of Rome, GA, and E. Randall (Janice) Allen, of Benson, NC. Grandchildren are Michael Allen, Daniel Bain, Elizabeth Allen, Katherine Dangerfield, Thomas Bain, Amanda Allen, Andrew Allen, Joseph Allen, Rebecca Allen and Benjamin Allen, Jacob Allen, Hannah Allen, Hunter Allen and Robert Allen.
A private memorial service will be held for the family. The family thanks Dr. Craig Caldwell and staff and Hospice Care Options and Monroe County Memorial Chapel for their support and assistance.
