Sgt. Maj. Oliver B. Stoner, Jr. USMC (Ret)
Forsyth . . . Sgt. Maj. Oliver B. Stoner, Jr. USMC (Ret) 89, beloved husband of Rowena Moylan Stoner for 63 years entered into rest on Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at University Hospital, in Augusta, Georgia. A Rosary will be said at 6:00 p.m., Monday, March 2, 2015, at Monroe County Memorial Chapel, followed by a time of visitation until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at Monroe County Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Milledgeville, Georgia, at 2:30 p.m. Father Michael Kavanaugh will officiate.
Mr. Stoner was born and raised in and around Black Mountain Kentucky. He lied about his age to join the Marine Corps in 1942. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1969 as a Sergeant Major after serving and fighting in three wars. He received the Bronze Star with combat ‘V’ while serving his last tour in Vietnam.
Mr. Stoner and his family settled in Forsyth after he retired from the Marine Corps. He was among the first male college students at Tift College. He retired again as a Lieutenant from the Georgia Department of Corrections in 1988. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Deer Trail Country Club in Barnesville where he enjoyed vying for ‘holes in one’ with a group of other stalwart golfers. Oliver was a life member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and past member of the Marine Corps League. Oliver and Rowena are members of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Macon.
In addition to his wife, Rowena, he is survived by his beloved daughter Diane, son Jack (and his wife Nancy), and sisters Virginia Manor and Joy Krug. He leaves behind five loving grandchildren, Shawn Stoner, Jacquetta Ruston, Jessica Stoner, Jeffrey Stoner and Joanne Stoner; and five great grandchildren; Cole Tylor, Rebecca, Jacob, Jayden, and Jovi.
The family requests no flowers but suggests donations to Wounded Warrior Project, Post Office Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675, or to Holy Spirit Catholic Church Building Fund, 4074 Chambers Road, Macon, GA 31206.
Monroe County Memorial Chapel has charge of arrangements.
