Louise Benson Melton
Forsyth . . . Louise Benson Melton passed away Friday, October 4, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 7, 2013, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 40 Rumble Road, Smarr, Georgia, with burial in Monroe Memorial Gardens. Reverend Mike Benson and Reverend Liza Marler will officiate. The family will greet friends the day of the service from 10:00 a.m., until the hour of the service at the church.
Mrs. Melton, the daughter of the late Charlie Wyatt Benson and Kathryn Allen Benson was born October 31, 1924, in Conyers, Georgia. She was 20 and working at Robins Air Force Base when she joined the Women’s Army Corps in February 1945, and after basic training at Ft. Oglethorpe she was assigned to a medical office at Battey General Hospital. She was always proud of her service and also proud of her families, both the Bensons and the Meltons and enjoyed researching the family trees. Her husband, William Harold Melton preceded her in death. She retired from Mary Persons High School as a secretary. Mrs. Melton was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include her children, Robert “Bobby” (Anne) Melton of Forsyth, Elizabeth Melton of Forsyth, Steve (Faye) Melton of Columbus and William “Bill” Melton of Sevierville, Tennessee, brothers, Harold (Sue) Benson of Smarr and Charles (Betty) Benson of Warner Robins, sister, Kathryn Tingle of Forsyth, six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and her beloved pet "Buddy".
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, Post Office Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66678.
Monroe County Memorial Chapel has charge of arrangements.
