Juliette . . . . Dorothy Jean Truman Bassett, 84, of Juliette,
passed away peacefully on October 25, 2011.
Her life began on August 23, 1927 in Gary, Indiana, the
second daughter of George Harrison Raymond Truman
and Roberta Louise Burns Truman. She was a graduate of
Orlando High School and received her nursing degree from
Charity Hospital School of Nursing, New Orleans, LA, in
1947. She raised four children while her husband, Bill
Bassett, served in the U.S. Navy. They moved to Juliette in
1963 when he retired. She worked at Monroe County
Hospital for 11 years, Robins AFB for 17 years, and was jail
nurse at Monroe County Sheriffs Department.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 59-1/2
years, William E. Bassett, a son, Jonathan W. Bassett, a
daughter, Mary B. Ferrell, sister, Roberta Truman Farr and
husband Quentin Farr, of Cullowhee, N.C., and niece, Jean
Farr Pittillo, of Silva, N.C.
She was the oldest member and supporter of Juliette
United Methodist Church, and a friend in the Juliette
community for 48 years, often requested to provide nursing
care in the homes of friends and neighbors. She was a
member of Friends of the Library, Juliette River Club,
NARFE, AARP, and avid supporter of the American Red
Cross and Salvation Army. She enjoyed gardening, fishing,
baking and playing Scrabble.
She is survived and will be sadly missed by her son,
Stephen Bassett and wife, Dianna, of Juliette; a daughter,
Susan B. Tyler and husband, Dwight "Bear", of Juliette; five
grandchildren, Laura Bassett and Valerie Bassett, of
Juliette; Joshua Ferrell of Brunswick; Brandy Ferrell of St.
Simons Island; and Tye Tyler and wife, Nicole, of Valdosta;
a great-granddaughter, Sarah Ferrell, and a nephew, James
Farr (Sally) of Bradenton, Florida; her former
daughter-in-law, Susan Long Pearce of Forsyth and her
caregiver, Ernestine Ogletree.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m., Thursday,
October 27, 2011, at Monroe County Memorial Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October
28, 2011, at Juliette United Methodist Church with burial in
the church cemetery. The Reverend Stanley Harrell will
officiate.
The family would like to give special thanks and
appreciation for the care and support of Palliative Care
Transitions at the Medical Center and to Pine Point
Hospice.
Flowers will be accepted or the family suggests memorial
donations to Juliette United Methodist Church, P. O. Box
31, Juliette, Georgia.
Monroe County Memorial Chapel has charge of
arrangements.
